About Rail Travel in Sweden

Sweden sits on the northern edge of Europe, and although it requires some effort for the train traveler to get here (though easier now, thanks to the Oresund Bridge linking Denmark and Sweden), it’s definitely worth the trip. Stockholm and Gothenburg are increasingly fashionable, offering up plenty of urban delights—bars, galleries, first-class restaurants, clubs, and so on. But urban areas only take up a little more than 1% of the country, and travel beyond that features a wonderfully varied landscape of mountainous Arctic reaches in northern Lapland to the sandy white beaches of Skåne in the south.

Plus, the good news for rail travelers is that Sweden’s trains are among the most efficient and high tech in Europe, with easy rail access to all the top sights, along mostly scenic routes in a country that is relatively underpopulated compared to the rest of Europe. If you have a choice, come here in summer when the Midnight Sun extends the days in June and July. The climate is generally cool during this brief summer period, except on the southern coast, which can heat up like the Mediterranean.
